Spiritualism is based on beliefs thousands of years old. However its beginnings, in the way that we know it now, began around  160 years ago when a family of sisters in Hydesville, USA, were troubled by ghostly noises. They began to communicate through a series of rappings  ( one knock for ‘yes’, two for ‘no’) and from this learnt that a pedlar had formerly stayed in their house and been murdered. The body of an itinerant was eventually found in their cellar. These rapping's became known as the Hydesville Rappings and the Fox sisters eventually became household names. As a result, a number of prominent Mediums gave demonstrations throughout the nineteenth century and towards its end a number of Spiritualist Associations were formed.

During this time, a prominent Medium, Emma Hardinge Britten received the basis of the seven principles and in 1901 the Spiritualists National Union was formed ( incorporating many of the earlier Associations) and the principles formulated into the 7 Principles Of Spiritualism. From then on, these have been the guide to the Religion, Philosophy and Science of Spiritualism, for Spiritualism is all three, not just a religion.
